grEy is the preferred spelling in most dictionaries.
grAy is listed as the second, but acceptable spelling.
Interesting that you asked about the name, because i DID have a relative named Gray, with an A.

I just checked Webster and he said it can be either. I have wondered that myself for a long time. So l looked it up. Have a nice day! No gray clouds or grey clouds!

Gray is the prefered spelling although grey is also a perfectly acceptable alternative.

I would look in a box of Crayolas and go with which ever one it says. I say Gray, but I would trust Crayolas judgement.

I had a teacher that said one was a European. I looked in the Websters dictionary and it lists boths spellings.

I think it's either/or. My mom said that "grey" is British, and "gray" is American.
