If you got some cash get an IBM. Sony is good, but its service is poor. If you are doing graphic, go with Mac. Dell is cheap, but the parts break down so quick. Great service though, might be the best. Sometimes dell has a $750 off inspiron 700 deal.
Get one that is light, never get desktop replacement laptop, hot as hell. Light and cheap is the best deal. Probably dell or hp would be your best choice.

I've been supporting laptops in various business and high-travel environments for the better part of seven years and in my opinion the IBM thinkpad is absolutely the way to go. Yes they're pricey, but they tend to be rugged as all hell. I've got a 6 yr old laptop at the house (ancient by anyone's standards) that's still cheerfully chugging along four years after the warranty expired with no major repairs.

What kind of things do you do? If it is mainly Word, Excel, and stuff like that. A 1.8ghz processor is enough. 1GB of RAM will be fine, and a 40GB or 60GB hard drive should do it. A DVD-RW or a DVD/CD Combo drive is also a good thing to have in a laptop. For reliability I wouldn't suggest either. If something goes wrong and you ahve to send it in, you will get it back in a few months.

I highly reccomend the IBM thinkpad. It cost more but you get plenty of bang for the buck in its ruggedness and light weight.
