I don't know precisely your intention preferring Russia to nearby California. It could be just the desire for a change. Whatever it is it is a good thought. I take it you hail from the post-Gorbochev period. The pre-generation was higly strung about the then Soviet Union . USA and Russia were almost the anti-thesis of each other and consequently visits during that period were coloured through this vision. Now really is the time to visit it when it is trying to fall in line wiith the rest of the world. And ev en if old habits die hard there is a visible mellowing down. While you may be visiing Russia for just sight-seeing you cannot but be impressed by the effforts of the people reestablishing themselves from an idealistic world to a realistic one.It will be a good social experience.
