On US versions of Windows you need to hold down the ALT key while typing in a four-digit number from the number keypad.
eg.
ALT+0232 --> è
ALT+0228 --> ä
ALT+0196 --> Ã

Probably you do what you did to get that letter.
In Word, you can go to Insert>Symbol and do that, or you can press Ctrl+(symbol), then the letter it goes with. For example, A with the two dots can be gotten by: "Ctrl+Shift+:" then "A" or "a". Ctrl+Shift+~ then N or n gets you n with a tilde. Ctrl+' then e gets you e with an accent going to the right. Ctrl+, then c gets you a c with the squigle at the bottom, etc.
