Ask your local marketing company. Somewhere along the line there was some research whether it was a massive conducting or only word of mouth they found that the most popular answers were pink and blue. Hence you create a market based off the popular and over time these things are just taken up. Long story short- somebody in the clothes manufacting or some business started that trend so as to make more money.
Its a shame that the marketers can control so much of the population.

It wasn't always that way...
Pink was used for both girls and boys in 1918 and was used well into the 60's. It is only more recently that pink is associated with femininity.
(see below link and scroll down to "Pink in gender and sexuality")
I know this doesn't really answer your question, but it is still interesting.

Yellow and green are middle-sex colors. You want people to know if your baby is a boy or a girl, so stick with the traditional colors.

oddly enough in england the colours used to be the other way around blue was a girls colour, I know this is true but cant remember why they were or why they changed it, possibly something to do with the armed forces you need to check historical data on fashion and baby attire, for instance it was also common for baby boys even toddlers to wear dresses for ease of changing before poppers were invented. hope that was of some help.

Yellow and green are reserved when you buy something and do not know the gender of the baby.

I'm sure these color associations date back even before the famous art pair of ages ago, entitled "Pinky" and "Blue Boy." I have replicas hanging in my home. see them on the link below.

Wouldn't it seem logical that whoever decided it for mortal man, he/she was influenced by the will of God? So is that the source of the color schemes?
