He is the nicest guy and not only were his colleagues on the email list, he also cc:d the CEO of a partner firm... should I just tell him so he won't do it again, or was this as bad as it could get for him using a word he does not know how to spell and it's better to just ignore it? thanks!

you could make a slight joke of it, say something like 'oh my, I remember once when my grandma said the old folks band had a wonderful pianist, but my grandad misheard and thought she said wonderful penis ...'
Who knows, maybe people will remember a time when they've done something similar. It could be used as a good ice breaker or in after dinner speeches across the country.
Maybe tell him so that he won't do it the next time, but honestly, there are far worse things a person can do and if that's the worst mistake he ever makes then he's got nothing to worry about

I once had a boss who asked me to write something and he said it didn't need to be "The Winds Of War", which really confused me because that was a television mini-series until I figured out he meant "War And Peace" which is a much-used example of a voluminous book. I asked him if that's what he meant and he hasn't liked me ever since. But then I guess I'd rather be right than be liked. And he was pretty much an idiot.

I'm constantly pointing out to my co-workers mistakes in their emails (things like their/there, lose/loose, etc.).

Half the questions I answer on Yahoo answers is pointing out spelling and grammatical errors. In my mind unclear writing is just evidence of unclear speaking.

In the case of your boss I wonder what the hell they thought "be who of us" meant?

If your friend has a good grasp of the English language, I think a little humor would be in order. You might try telling him it was a typo. We all make them. However, if this is typical for him, don't say a word.

Can't talk...laughing...been on BOTH sides of this one!!!!!

As the one on the 'I can't believe I sent that', I'd be both grateful and mortified for the correction.

On the other side, having received a few doozies...I never did figure out a humane way to do it. Good luck!!
