They are right, no matter what they start. They just want to be left alone.

The simple answer -both sides are wrong.

The whole newest mess was started by a bunch of guerillas from Gaza who kidnapped the soldier; the Hezbollah did the same to two soldiers in northern Israel.

These are the "fighters" They'd be "freedom fighters" but freedom has nothing to do with their actions - if anything, they're for even more repression, but with themselves in charge.

The Middle East was starting to settle down, and get peaceful, especially Lebanon. The Hez and the Hamas would then have to behave like normal governments, They'd have to take care of school boards, garbage collection, pothole repair, and so on. These guys (a) have no idea how to do that properly and (b) don't like to work and (c) prefer the glory of shooting guns and rockets and (d) can't collect as much money from the usual cash cows without a fight going on. So, they did something provocative to keep the fire alive. They aren't the top leaders, they're the mid-level trench fighters.

Israel responds exactly as they expected, and exactly as they wanted. It attacks and wrecks things all over Gaza, and now Lebanon. Isreal thinks this will cause the moderates to turn on the militants, but instead it just gets everyone mad at Israel and gives the militants more support. Stupid of Israel - if you are going to use a carrot and stick approach, where's the carrots?

It will go on this way, then settle down for a while until the next provocative act. The real solution is to help the Palestinian middle class build itself up to something approaching rich. Right now, everyone is so poor, they have nothing to lose - so they sit on the sidelines and applaud their side. Give them something real they might lose, and they'd be telling the militants very quickly to simmer down - and that same middle class would be the ones collecting the salaries for running the schools, fixing the potholes, etc. - pushing the fighters to the sidelines where they'd have to give up their guns and get a real job...

Oh, well, not this year.

I've been watching the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for a long time. I'm kind of old (56) and have no previous reason to take up either side. I'm not a Jew, but a kind of casual Christian. What we are seeing is a war between Israel and terrorist factions. The bulk of Palestinians would probably live in peace with Israelis if given the option. The trouble is, there is Hamas and groups like them who state in formal terms that they aim to destroy Israel. They deny it's right to exist at all and claim all violent means are ok to destroy it. This includes killing toddlers, women, anyone with actual glee expressed.

Israel on the other hand is a tough adversary and kicks ***, BUT they are fair. They have tried to give peace a chance in all kinds of ways.. handing over territory, etc. and even now send humanitarian aid into Palestinian sectors for the civilian population. They also try hard not to hit civilians. After long and careful thought, I have to side with Israel. I can't see how anyone who studies the facts could side with those brutal terrorist factions at all.. Israel has it's back against the wall and is now trying to disorganize the terrorist forces, who are being supported directly by Syria and Iran. After a few weeks, they will accomplish that and things will simmer down again for a while. It's a cycle that repeats.

I stand behind Israel and their moves. They are a great ally to the US and we need to stand up for our allies. United you stand, divided you fall, as the saying goes. Im also glad we used our veto power in the UN to stop measures against Israel.

First off I want to say that everyone’s ideas and thoughts (including my own) should be taken very lightly. We are all getting our information from someone elses point of view, which is often skewed. For instance turn on FOX news and CNN, and you will find neither one says the same thing about any situation. So unless we are their first hand im afraid none of us have the right to speak out against Israel.

With that said, I will now give my skewed :) thoughts....

First off I want to say I admire Israel. Everyone around them wants them dead, and they are a very tough people who stand up for themselves and dont take crap from anyone, and that is the main reason they are all still alive to this day. They have been fighting wars for hundreds of years. They also were the first to be attacked. They sent out demands to get their soldier back and to stop the rocket attempts. They then amassed their troops on the boarder further saying... "Give him back... were serious" to which they got no reply just rocket fire... so they invaded.

If what I have read is right, I believe it is right of Israel to attack the boarders. The boarders are where many of the crazy militants are, and thus was the first place that Israel struck. The militants were who took their guy and so they struck their first. Then once Palestinians didn’t do a damn thing, they started bombing their places too. To say... "Hey get these stupid militants to give us our guy back". Which is fair enough in my eyes. It is the Palestinians and the Lebanese who protect and hide these militants. If you really want peace with the world, start cracking down on your militants... Or even ask Israel to come into your country and eradicate them. But no... they just get mad... because its those same militants that pay for everything, so of course the governments want to protect them... they just don’t want it obvious that they are protecting them.

Bla... anyways .... I’m rambling so im going to stop.... GOOD JOB ISRAEL. Im glad you have the ballz to stand up for yourself. Wish more countries were like you. I hope the US backs you 120%, I would be glad to fight for your country any day!!!!

easily, it replaced into the British that partioned Palestine in 1948 which resulted interior the formation of Israel. Israel provided the Arabs residing in Israel finished citizenship and comprehend for his or her beliefs. there are a range of arabic Israeli electorate at present. in the course of the 60's and 70's Israel's acquaintances wanting to gang up on her and attack her. They were given their butts kicked. The treachery of the the Arab international encompass Israel is why the U. S. is a staunch defender of Israel. Israel easily has no difficulty with a non violent Palestine being their neighbor, they do even if have a difficulty with providing out of control authentic property close sufficient for missle launch or artillery strikes antagonistic to Hafia, Jeruslem etc. so a techniques as Palestine is going, the arab international ought to have resolved that project some time previous--except for the actual undeniable actuality that it really is to their benefit to keep the Palestinians from growing to be rich and non violent--works more suitable useful for something of the arab international to keep Palestine a festering mattress of hatred.

Israel does have the right to defend itself we all agree on that. But this time around it is out of hand. Self defense in the name of collectively punishing densly populated areas and paying little attention to the safety of civilians on both sides is not defense.

The Israeli Army, with the Prime Minister's green light, has violated International Law and broken several articles of the Geneva Convention. International Law states, that no state is allowed to invade or occupy a soverign state for any reason be it militarily or otherwise.

The United Nations passed a resolution calling for Israel to halt its attack on Lebanon because of the threat it poses for ordinary Lebanese and Palestinians but was vetoed by the United States. Had any other country acted in the same way, the U.S. would have been the first to say, "This is an outrageous show of force! You have broken International Law, have no respect for the UN resolutions and pose a grave threat to our and the world's security!"
Perhaps that unamed country would have also been sanctioned, look what's happening to North Korea. It tested several missles and the U.S. with much convincing the UN is planning to sanction it, leaving the North Korean people to suffer in poverty and isolation. While no one was hit by any of the nuclear missles, ordinary North Koreans are still going to be punished for the actions of their government. Much like the Palestinians are being punished now for the actions of Hamas and Lebanese are dying and seeking shelter because of Hezbullah in Lebanon.

Yet when Israel acts in such ways, which some would label as state terrorism had it been Cuba or Iran for that matter, everyone says, "Israel has the right to defend itself. Its battling brutal terrorists that wants to wipe it off the map." After that no one is allowed to criticize or voice their objections because the objector would be labeled as a sympathizer of Hamas and Hezbullah. With North Korea and other developing nations for acting out of line its punishment with sanctions, with Israel it is the other way around.

Perhaps it is favoritism on part the U.S. and other Western powers. But do not be surprise if Israel's actions, Hezbullah's and Hamas' stubborness causes a terrorist attack. And no this is not World War III, it is both bullying and political fighting to gain power.

I will not judge Israel but violence will never bring peace or security. I will say this clearly is not an act of self-defence. Innocent men, women and children are being killed on both sides. We all must look beyond our physical selves to the inner essence we all share. We are all one whether your selfish ego can see it or not. It is our egos that keep us feeling separate from one another. Look beyond your ego...beyond your thoughts. Even those that appear to be our enemies are part of the oneness. It's not some feeling you need to find or understand. It just is.

wrong.
a. israel does many worse things to palastine but no one gave a damn. so, by taking two israeli soldiers, you go and ruin a whole country!? how fair can tht be!
b. Hezbollah are not the government of lebanon and do not represent lebanon. so, israel has no right to attack the capital of the country. if they wanted to, they could hit Hezbollah in the south, but instead they hit the north!
what goes around, comes around. and i can't wait to see tht happen to israel!
