From what I found, it looks like both of them were sent off once at the World Cup.
"In a friendly played in 1965, Pelé intentionally broke Kiesman's, a West German player's, leg.
In a Santos x Cruzeiro match, played in 1968, Pelé broke the leg of Procópio.
At 1970 FIFA World Cup semis, Pele hit the Uruguayan player Fontes with his elbow."
I couldn't find much about Maradona's club games, but here is what I found about his "bad" performances at the World Cup (apart from "the hand of God"):
"In 1982, Maradona played his first World Cup tournament. In the first round, Argentina, as defending champions, lost to Belgium 0-1. Although the team convincingly beat Hungary and El Salvador to progress to the second round, they were defeated in the second round by Italy (1:2), the side which eventually won the cup, and Brazil (1:3), during which game Maradona was sent off for kicking an opponent.
He arrived at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and played two games (scoring one goal) before being sent home after failing a drug test for ephedrine doping."

Pele. Sure, don't get me wrong. Maradona was an awesome player. One of the best footballers in the history of the sport. But Pele just owns soccer or football or whatever you prefer. He is the king. Keep your eye on Lionel Messi. He is the best in the world currently IMO, and he still has a big future ahead of him. He could very well be the next Maradona or The New Pele.
