According to whom?
Time has the 100 best all time novels, and the Modern Library has one as well, but neither are only American Lit.
Sam Tanenhaus did a poll and the following were the 5 from the poll.
Beloved by Toni Morrison
Underworld by Don DeLillo
John Updike's Rabbit Angstrom novels
Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
American Pastoral by Philip Roth
If you're asking for personal oppinion, however, I am not sure how much help I can be (not a huge American lit. person -- prefer Brishish). I think I'd pick:
Portrait of a Lady: Henry James
Our Town: Thornton Wilder
The Awakening: Kate Chopin
The Blithedale Romance : Narthaniel Hawthorn
Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin: Benjamin Franklin
(oh, after looking at some of the other lists I want to include Farwell to Arms by Hemingway (that may be my favorite) and Great Gatsby also)
(I've also added a listing of American authors that might help you)
