There is a control for the accelerator that is supposed to idle the engine up when it gets put into reverse or when the a/c is on. This particular symptom sounds like a vaccum leak though. Check all of your vaccum hoses on the car....chances are that one or more are rotted and cracked.

OK here's how to check: Get a buddy. One stands in front of the engine with the hood open, other starts the car and sits in it. Guy in car puts it in gear, fwd or reverse, and keeps foot on the brake while gently tapping GENTLY tapping the accelerator pedal. Does the engine twist about and raise in the air oddly?
You have broken motor mounts if it does. So yeah if you've seen the engine raise, it's likely that. Don't try to fix this yourself. Pay someone - it's SUCH a pain in the *** !

Definetly the motor mounts, check the mount at the front of the car, behind rad, probably torn, mine was. CHeck all the rest too, one torn can put lots of excess stress on the rest. I owned and 88 topaz, and am a licenced tech.
