Yeah.. Home Depot should have carbide tipped bits. The one better than that is a cobalt tip - but I think it's overkill.. unless you're talking stainless steel. They should have either of those.

I wouldn't buy the steel bits or high speed tip.

And yup. they just look like a regular drill bit and fit in a regular drill.. (well.. assuming it a small bit.) Most drills are 3/8. If you have a 1/2" hole to make or larger.. and you only have a 3/8 drill, you need to make sure the bit has a 3/8 base to it. Contractors use 1/2 drills usually. But homeowners usually have 3/8. That's the size of the opening in the drill where ya put duh bit :)

Dat about it.

The "standard" drill bit most people think of (the one that sort of looks like a spiral with an angled tip) is actually designed for drilling through metal. They should carry them in any local hardware store. If you have questions, the best person to talk to is the guy who works there. Make sure the bit is made of a tougher metal than the one you are trying to drill through, and that it fits in your drill.

For drilling through metal, I would recommend a drill that plugs in (as opposed to a cordless) as they have a constant supply of power - it takes a while to drill through steel, and your batteries may die in the cordless.

Also, before you start drilling, you may want to get a nail or something and put a little ding or divet at the exact spot you want to drill. Bits tend to slide around on the surface of metals until they get a chance to "bite" into it, and the divet will help keep the tip of the bit in place.

I guess that depends on how big a hole you want to drill. Any drill bit designed for steel will work fine, and can be purchased at Home Depot. Just make sure it will fit in the chuck of your drill.

I don't know about Home Depot but I believe you can buy bits from them for steel that may attach to your home drill.

Buy a couple of bits. Also use a lubricant, wd40, thrust, or they have special can sprays for drilling.
