Complacency and the refusal to accept the truth is going to be our downfall. To even countenance the truth gets cries of anti-Americanism.

I guess this is the wrong answer, as it's not what you wanted to hear, but I honestly don't know what you're talking about. The reason why most Americans don't "stand up" is because we like how things are. Life is good here. I disagree with almost everything that the Bush Administration does, but I am positive that they're hurting themselves and are showing the world how not to act. The more they try to screw around, the more people continue to dislike them and act against them. Bush was once one of the most well-liked men in the world, and now he's disliked by almost everyone, including the people who still pretend to like him. This is how it should be. We have a system for dealing with these kinds of things, and it's working. It's slow, but slow isn't necessarily bad. Revolutions are much quicker, and have turned out much much worse.
The reason people take aggressive action is because they don't feel like they have any other alternatives. But most of us don't feel that way. We DO have outlets for expressing our opinions and for getting our voice heard. And the more people agree with us, the louder our voice is. That is what's called democracy, and I think it works pretty well. Sure, I don't get what I want 100% of the time, but I'm not supposed to. I don't want everyone else agreeing with me about everything. I like that people disagree with me. And sure, we have these periods when the creeps take over and screw things up, but that just reminds us more of why we shouldn't be like them. It's not good for us to push too hard in any one direction, and it's a natural thing that allows them to show us why we shouldn't push in their direction.
But overall, life is pretty damn good here and there isn't enough to complain about to "stand up" to our "elites". And if life gets much worse, then that will change. But we are not cowards. We are adequately satisfied. We have a system for dealing with complaints and it works fairly decently. You might disagree with me, and feel that it's ok to insult us; but the best reaction you'll get is a polite disagreement, like what I'm doing. And at the worst, you'll be insulted in return.
I can't imagine why you'd think that calling us cowards would make us agree with you, but the fact that it doesn't is just more proof that you're wrong. It's also evidence that you know very little of human nature. If you want someone to agree with you, insulting them doesn't help. That's how President Bush handles things, and he's now one of the least popular presidents in American history. Don't be like President Bush.
