usually most of my answers about cleaning is baking soda.
But for this one I go complety different.
You might think it sounds weird, but using a tooth brush damped with water, dipped in cigarette ashes, gently scrub the chain.
Adding more ash as needed .
Then rinse in clear water.
You have a very inexpensive jewelry cleaner that works really well.
Hope this helps .

Tarnx type stuff is really harsh. Start off with something a bit softer, then go from there. The best product I've ever found for cleaning silver jewelry is Wright's Silver Cream, it comes in a little jar with a sponge. It's very mild, yet cleans well.

On the other hand, since your chain has special meaning to you, you might consider taking it to a professional jeweler to have cleaned.

Toothpasted not gel. Use a soft tooth brush. Rinse with water. Baby will it shine. Thank your husband for his duty. I hope he's home and in good health.

Make a paste of baking soda and use a damp cloth and dip into paste and rub until comes clean, it works!!! Or if you want to buy something at store, get Tarn-X, it works instantly and you dont have to rub.

tarn-x or they sell hypersonic agitators at like Sharper Image that you can soak the chain in there and it emits sound waves at the chain releasing all that tarnish and gunk in between the chains. I have two chains and getting in those spaces is murder. the units cost like $30 usually but worth the investment if you really value your chain there.

Buy silver cleaner. You can usually find it in the household cleaner isle. They also have silver polishing clothes at WalMart.
