"Hand In My Pocket" by Alanis Morissette was the theme song used in the original pilot episode that was shown only to members of the media and potential advertisers.

A couple of months before the series was to premiere, Alanis decided that she didn't want the song to be used.

"I Don't Want To Wait" is the official theme song of Dawson's Creek, played during it's opening credits.

"I Don't Want To Wait" has been heard in the opening credits for all seasons except during Season 1 international airings (non USA/Canada).

In those airings, the song "Run Like Mad" which is performed by Jann Arden, was heard.

Beginning with season 2 international airings, this song was replaced with "I Don't Want To Wait". The reason was simple... the show's producers thought it would be best that Dawson's Creek had only one theme song.

Episode #504 "The Long Goodbye" featured a special one-time airing of different music over the opening credits... a slow tempo piano arrangement of Paula Cole's "I Don't Want To Wait", arranged by Creek composer Adam Fields.

This was special as it coincided with the death of Dawson's father.

Episode #515 "Downtown Crossing" featured a special instrumental version of the opening credits music composed by Adam Fields.

It did not include any of the video footage as seen with other season 5 episodes. The names of the characters displayed over dark clouds with background instrumental music.

The episode solely featured the Joey and the mugger storyline.

Song Title: I Don't Want To Wait
Artist: Paula Cole
Album: This Fire
Release Date: 1995

So open up your morning light,
And say a little prayer for I.
you know that if we are to stay alive.
Then see the peace in every eye.

She had two babies. One was six months, one was three
In the war of '44.
Every telephone ring, every heartbeat stinging
When she thought it was God calling her.
Oh would her son grow to know his father?

I don't want to to wait for our lives to be over,
I want to know right now what will it be.
I don't want to wait for our lives to be over,
Will it be yes or will it be sorry?

He showed up all wet on the rainy front step.
Wearing shrapnel in his skin.
And the war he saw lives inside him still,
It's so hard to be gentle and warm.
The years pass by and now he has granddaughters

I don't want to to wait for our lives to be over,
I want to know right now what will it be.
I don't want to wait for our lives to be over,
Will it be yes or will it be sorry?

You look at me from across the room
You're wearing your anguish again
Believe me I know the feeling
It sucks you into the jaws of anger.
So breathe a little more deeply my love
All we have is this very moment
And I don't want to do what his father,
and his father, and his father did,
I want to be here now.

So open up your morning light,
And say a little prayer for I
You know that if we are to stay alive,
Then see the love in every eye.

run like mad......jann arden

"Run Like Mad" has also gone by the title "Elsewhere". Actually, there really is no official title because it was never recorded as a full song. The piece heard in the opening credits is all that was recorded, specially for Dawson's Creek. It is NOT available on any of Jann's albums nor any of the international releases of the Dawson's Creek soundtracks. There are currently no plans to re-record the song or to make this "intro" available on any recording. Anyhow, future plans are not up to Jann as the rights to the song are controlled by the show.

I Don't Want To Wait by Paula Cole is the one in the opening credits. But the real song that was supposed to be the theme was Hand in my pocket by Alanis Morissette but she asked for it not be after the 1st screening.
