Well sure you were born in America and have an "American" spirit but you are actually a mix of other cultures. When people attack I would tell them my heritage, example:
"you're an american, you suck" I would say "I was born in the united states of america but I am Irish, German, English, and Scottish, right now I live here (wherever you are) so I am at the present a (where you are) just like you, but I do speak foreign languages and want to help others learn different cultures"
You didn't say where you live now but chances are the people there are a mix of different cultures too and just 100% something.

I'm sorry I don't agree with you that all persons from other countries admire the American. We tend to be viewed as loud-mouthed, rude stuff-shirts. And yes, our demeanor tends to give the impression, that we think we're better than other nationalities.
And by your espression of "these whimps" I believe that this is the impression that you are giving these people. And the reference that "the chicks" here think their men are the best is definately showing the fact you think you're better than they are. Calm down, get to know them as a people, learn from their culture, do your best to show them you DO respect them as a people. Then I believe the attacks will be fewer. and eventually disappear

There is some anti-American sentiment in many countries, especially if you are in the middle East or southern Asian states. I am not saying its founded, as this is often based on fear and bias against what these people may have been taught about "Americans", which I personally think is ludicrous as each American is just as individual as anybody else from any other country.

You got my attention! I also teach English, but in a place called high school. Every day we teach in high school, we are attacked by the locals... I am not really trying to be funny, but teaching is a very hard job. No one seems to respect the fact that we are there to try to help. Of course we want the paycheck (mine is lousy -- I'm sure yours is better), but that is not really all there is to it. The pay "ain't" that great!!! So, everywhere we are we can be attacked on a daily basis.
Now if you mean physically, that hasn't happened to me yet That would really pursuade me to change careers! I want to thank you for your thankless job and hope you can tolerate it as long as you need to. Just don't let yourself be in serious danger, okay?

Well from your description I would assume that you are in a country dominated by Latino people.
If this is true get used to it.
This is not a slur but in fact a statement of how a culture works.
It would be the same as the US girls who admire the boys that play on the football team, or the wrestlers.
Our culture tells the girls to get a strong handsome man and that is how the boys in our culture show there strength.
The Latino people go for courage, and even if they don't physically attack you they are showing the girls how courageous they are by taunting you and that you do not challenge them back.
You are making them look good for their girls.
Just go about your business as you are. Don't try to smile and wave as it will be seen as if you are mocking them and things will escalate to violence.
I hope my personal views make sense to you and that you are helped by it.
Good luck

Well, you already answered your question. You are being attacked because you are American. That's really sad but, keep trucking. I really do applaud the fact that you would leave your country to go teach in a place that is foreign to you. Big ups!

There is a reason you are standing out from the crowd. Are you wearing flashy Hawaiin shirts? A baseball cap with a teams logo? Try dressing like the natives.
If you are wearing a business suit it will stand out like a flag.
Where are you? North Korea? Even China doesn't treat Americans like that.

That happens everywhere. When I go to England I'm "just" a Spaniard. And all the people I know that live in the States and come from Spain are treated as "just immigrants"

where are you at???? they're probably just jealous because they're miserable and don't have it as good as you do. NEVER apologize to anyone for being American!!! especially since they know damned well they would give their right arms to be here. but be careful though. very careful. they may attack, (probably will) one of these days.
