I'm heavily invested in gold miner stocks, which should shelter from some of the carnage but tomorrow should be more market wide pain.

With everything the way it is, whats going to happen in the market tomorrow? Particularly what will have so the Primary Metals -> Gold industry?

You could short the metals sector with this : http://www.profunds.com/profiles/profile.asp?id=135
and if you are long other stock sectors, there are many other short funds to "hedge" your portofolio.

but with all the instability in the MiddleEast, Iran and North Korea.....gold and most of the metals should gather support

It appears that you are reaching your choke point.

It is very important that the previous low hold. You could let the market tell you what to do, by putting a Protective Stop under the previous low, good-'til-canceled. Give it 1% of room, or about 100 pts on the Dow, to make a new low. If it holds, you stay in. If it breaks you're automatically out.

This way, you no longer live on hope and fear. It is a rational and logical decision. Then the market can do what it will do, and no amount of hope or fear from you will change it. You can live with whatever it does. If it goes down another 1,000 pts, you will be set to invest at lower prices, rather than strangling yourself.

I've never understood the "Buy and Hold" strategy. Why own a liquid asset in a downtrend in price?

Hold the actual gold bullion in these days, it is different than the gold stocks as they drop with stock market....check out the 1987 crash and the gold stocks dropped in tandem with market while gold held up....once the XAU index completes this drop to perhaps 105 however, you want to load up on the gold stocks then....I would hold your gold stocks now though. you can wait until Nov/Dec as that is the season for gold and a time to take profit

fwiw.
