Simple sparklers. Take about twenty of them and tape them together with a whole roll of electrical tape. Leave on of the sparklers sticking out for a fuse. It makes a good bang. Normally sparklers are a lame firework but this makes them fun.
Another thing you can do is take hth. Which is powdered chlorine for treating pools, put it in a cola bottle with just a little cola left in it. Give it a good shake and throw it. It will swell the bottle and it will explode without all of the fire.

I had a friend from poland back in junior high that taught me how to make a pipe bomb out of a pipe and some dry ice. It only makes noise, though. As long as no one's right next to it, they'll be ok. It's so loud, though

Do a Molotov cocktail. In a bottle of glass, filled half with engine oil and half with gasoline, tip it with a flammable cloth, light on the damn cloth and there you go! Throw it like a granade!
