how long should i apply a self tan in order for it to stay without having to use the lotion/spray? or does it work like that?

No tan stays for good. Your skin continues to renew itself daily.
I use Jergen's Natural Glow (dark) and effoliate with every shower to keep my tan. I found this product to work the best.

The lotion is just to moisturize your skin, if your skin is dry the tan will flake off easier. In any case you should shower and exfoliate ...with a scrubbie before you self tan and then it will only last about 3 days before beginning to break up.
Skin sheds a layer a day so there is no permanent way to apply a self tanner.

Different products have different instructions. However, majority of products require 2 hours of not washing the area. The tan should stay on for at least 3 days.

no...it says on the bottle that it lasts for usually a few days!?!?!?!
