India
With temperatures soaring high in the northern parts of the country, Srinagar experienced the hottest day in 31 years on Saturday as the mercury rose to 34.5 degrees centigrade, 4.5 degrees above normal.
One person had died of heat stroke on Friday while several others fell unconscious, including 14 schoolchildren.
The deceased, Abdul Karim Sheikh, fell unconscious and died while offering his Friday prayers at a Srinagar mosque. There was widespread panic among Kashmiris as Srinagar usually plays summer retreat to tourists from the rest of the country during the months of April to June.
"It will get bad, really bad if it does not rain and stays the way it is. I am 62, but I heard yesterday after what felt like ages that somebody died of the heat. It is getting hotter everyday," said Ghulam Hassan, a senior resident of the city who has seen many a summer, but none so hot.
But officials said that the situation might get worse, as the temperature is expected to climb to 36 degrees in coming days.
"We would like to warn the Srinagar residents that from the last week of June to the third week of July, it will get very hot. Unless we get thundershowers in between, it will stay hot for these 40 days. We will get back to normal only when the monsoon current strikes Kashmir," said C. Rao, Director, Meteorological Department in Srinagar.
School children were the worst hit as several fell to the scorching sun. The district administration is considering closure of all schools for the next couple of weeks.
"The heat is increasing everyday. It was never so hot here. It is raining fireballs now. Now when we go out we have a bottle in our hands for sure, the way we carried bags on our shoulders. If it stays like this, Kashmir will soon turn into a desert," said Rashid, a school student.
The streets wore a deserted look, as people turned to parks and the local zoo for shade and respite while ice candies and cold drinks sold like hot cakes. (ANI)
