If you're buying comics solely as an investment, then you're going to be disappointed. I used to run a comic shop in the 90s (right before the crash). Every day there would be a customer coming up to my counter with a new comic he picked off the shelf and asking me, "Is this going to be worth a lot of money?" Well, I thought to myself, I'll just go call Dionne my psychic friend and ask her. One customer even had the audacity to ask me to pull comics from each week's shipment I thought would be worth hundreds of dollars a year from now (or then in that case). If I knew that for sure, does he really think I would put them out on the shelf brand new for cover price? Greed tends to cloud one's common sense, that is, if he had any to begin with.
I never encouraged customers to buy comics in the hopes that they will be able to put themselves through college from the future resale of them.
As for eBay, I've tried selling on there with limited success. I will say this; anything published within the last 25 years (with a very few exceptions) is mostly likely not going to sell, unless the opening bid is abysmally small or you're selling a run of 10, 20, etc..
But rule of thumb when collecting comics is: buy what you enjoy; any monetary gain on resale should be secondary if at all.

15 years ago you bought 2 cpoies of everthing, One to read and one to store. Those days are gone. Comics are a medium for active imaginations not overglutted with internet information.
You cannot think of them as a short term investment, just some decent entertainment. If you preserve what you buy then mabey when the books become rare a good copy of an average mag will be worth something again.

don't worry about trying to get your money back, you should only buy things you are interested in and as long as you are not going hungry or stealing to support the habit don't worry about what others say or if you will be able to get your money back. Because unless you get a 1 in a million comic you will never get stated value in the guides for your comics. It is only worth what someone else will give you for it .. not a number in a mag or book. That goes for just about any thing you will collect that could have a value.
So buy what you like.

If you're looking at comics as an investment, yes, they are a waste of money. If you read the comics and enjoy their art and story, they are not a waste of money. Comic books are not the stock market.

Comics are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them. As a collectible it is quite a risk. If you are interested in comics then you should enjoy the stories and art and not worry about them being valuable.

of course not. Comics are collectibles. and when u purchase these 'collectibles'.. the first thing that should enter your mind is that you love these comics because of what they are. yep greater artwork and storylines are noticeable in todays comics, especially DC and marvel. and when the time comes that the comics are old, and u are saddened of the thought that you wont be able to sell them,, just think that these comics are now a big part of us and has been and always will be a reminder of our childhood =p

The only comics that are truly worth buying for investment purposes are; variants covers, first issues, 100th issues, etc. But most comics are never going to be worth much more than you originally paid for them.

It's a dying breed, and there is not a new generation interested enough to keep it alive for too much longer unless we somehow reinspire the youth to READ. It's all about games now.
I just found out my favourite comic artist, Jae Lee, will be illustrating a comic by Stephen King, and that will keep me interested.

Comics are not a waste of money if you enjoy reading them. That is their purpose. They are not meant to buy as an investment.
