I BEGIN SERIOUS, WHO INVENTED "YOUR MOMMA"JOKES?

My understanding is that "yo mamma" jokes were popular among, and perhaps originated with, ***** slaves in America. Slaves of different masters would trade these barbs with each other, substituting "mamma" for "master" so that they wouldn't get in trouble if somebody overheard them. (In other words, it wasn't their mommas but their masters that they were actually taking shots at.)

The first time I ever heard these , they were used by Flip Wilson or on the old show, "Laugh In" in the 60's. Flip Wilson used to say "Yo Mama", to reply to set up jokes.
Laugh-In used these and Flip Wilson used to be on that show, also.
That's the first time I've ever heard them.
