I have a houseplant that was given to me. It has big dark green leaves and blooms pinkish red small flowers that look like hearts and grow on long stems like the leaves. I think it only blooms once a year, in the summer time.. any ideas of what kind of plant it could be???

It sounds like an antherium. Bleeding heart does not grow as a house plant and has foliage much different than the description above. The leaves of your plant are probably glossy and the flower thick and waxy unlike the thin leaves of a bleeding heart.
