No there aren't.
If his pain IS due to the hernia he ought to seek medical attention. Does it still go back in? If not, there is a chance that this pain may indicate the incarceration of the hernia which is ominous since this, left untreated, can progress to obstruction (if it contains bowel) or strangulation of the hernia.
If it is soft and generally eaily reducible, then it is still worth considering elective surgery as this is the only reliable way of reducing the pain.

I had a inguinal hernia so I know something about them. First a right inguinal hernia is the most common in men. Like all hernias they will get worse with time. There are some support shorts that you can buy that will help reduce the pain, but it is not a cure. The only cure is surgical reduction. Strangulation of the bowel in a hernia is a very small risk, but an extremely serious condition. Have your dad contact a hernia specialist to make sure the surgery is done correctly the first time. I did and now I have no problems, it is commonly performed as a day surgery. Have him call North Penn Hernia Inst. Dr. Goodyear in Pittsburgh, PA. Well worth the trip, I went from MN to PA to get mine done.
