It depends what's causing the headache...sometimes all you need to do is take a nap. Sleep deprivation causes headaches. So does hunger, stress, sinus infections, ear infections, fever, eyestrain, allergies, flashing lights...lots of causes.

If a painkiller isn't available and you're sure it's not a life threatening situation, try this: sit with your legs crossed and your back straight, or lie on your back with your knees supported. Close your eyes and breathe deeply and slowly...eight counts in and eight counts out. Try not to let your mind wander anywhere; pay attention only to your breath. Relax your facial muscles, then neck, shoulders, arms, chest, etc...all the way down to your toes. Give it a good 20 minutes...at least as long as it would take for Tylenol to work.

Headaches can be a sign of dehydration, if you feel thristy, or haven't had any water in a while, take a break and drink some water. If this isn't the case, you may not want to drink water.

Message your temples, and close your eyes. As well, get to a quiet place. Sensory deprivation can help relieve some headaches.

If your headache persists, grows more painful, or causes other phenomenon you may want to talk to your physician.

If your headache is caused by muscular tension (most are) then you should soak your feet in hot water and cover your head with a cool towel. What this does is bring more blood out of the upper body and relieve the pressure in you head. Yes this works, but only for muscle tension headaches.

If you don't have any Tylenol, Motrin, Advil, Aleeve, etc, try drinking something containing caffeine, lay down flat on your back in a dark room, and place a cold wash cloth on your forehead. Also, keep the noise to a minimum. Hope you feel better. from, Jill,R.N.

Take a nap in a dark room, make sure there is not a lot of outside noise. Relax! Think about something that is calming to you and drink water to keep hydrated.
