Sometimes diet plans fail because they like some exercise plans become chores that you either acquire a habit for or a loath of. The better diets have the idea of and exercise plan co-joined so that when you eat starts to have a clearer relationship to how much energy you have burned.
That said I have tried the idea of reducing myself to two meals a day and treat the meals a a sort of ritual. Another words I make the act of eating something slow drawn out and formal or in essence a major task from cooking to cleaning up after. I try to avoid keeping fast foods and snacks around but do include one desert per day.
If you have never used Chopsticks that can be an interesting approach because that will take time to master and you have to make the pieces small enough to handle. The chore of preparing such a meal and really looking at your food aesthetically can also make you rethink how and what you eat. Not to fall into stereotypes but notice Japanese people are well dieted because of these same considerations and when the urge to snack comes take some tea and use sweetener or honey instead of sugar.

Best thing for me was to start eating Frozen entrees (like Lean Cuisine and Smart Ones). The meals are nutritionally and portionally balanced. I really had no idea what "one serving of protein" or "two servings of vegetables" looked like until I did.
When eating out, I usually split my entree in half and the next time the server comes around, I ask for a box and put half away immediately so I don't just keep on eating.
Also, be very aware of the fluids that you drink. Soda, coffee (with sweetener and creamer), and even juice all carry a lot of sugar and calories that you may not account for when you think about your typical diet. Switch to water, unsweetened coffee and tea as much as possible, and you'll be amazed how many calories are cut out of your diet immediately.
Try to make more sensible choices when buying foods--get breads with whole grains instead of white, buy lots of green leafy vegetables (and then EAT them when you get home!), and look for fruits and veggies that have lots of fiber (peaches, bananas, mangos, squash, etc), which helps flush your system.
But when you try to incorporate new choices into your diet, don't deny yourself entirely of all your favorite goodies, or else you're setting yourself up for defeat. A little treat every once in a while helps maintain your commitment--maybe after a week of making good food decisions or doing whatever exercise you choose for 15 minutes three times a week, have a (small) bowl of your favorite ice cream.

Good luck! You can do it!

First of all, there is no such thing as self control. Your body needs certain things to be happy and healthy. Overeating is an addiction and should be treated as such. When you are dealing with an addiction, you should trade one addiction for another more healthy one. If you are an overeater, this is what you do...
Give yourself permission to overeat. When you get the late night munchies, overeat on strawberries, grapes, berries, etc. This will satisfy your body's craving for sweets and that "full" feel at the same time. After you have allowed yourself to overeat on good foods for a while, your body will naturallty stop eating as much.
Also, switch back to whole milk (only pasturized, not homogenized). Do not eat low fat/no fat items. This causes weight gain. That was an 80's fad, and it also caused depression.
You need to start on a good sublingual B12, B6, and Folic Acid. St. John's Wart will also be helpful during this process. You are probably dealing with depression too.
Make sure to find another was to get rid of stress and anxiety before you start this process. Remember, find a new good addiction.
Good luck

Make a meal plan and stick to it.Eat breakfast lunch and dinner and a snack in between. You will crave food but you won't be hungry until the hour leading up to a meal.Until then.....try and find something else to do.And always take an hour long walk after dinner before you go to bed.it will help you use the calories from dinner while you sleep.I am having a huge problem with over eating right now and this is what I have been doing.I have been eating yogurt for breakfast,a salad for lunch, and a light dinner.and i walk after dinner.I also drink water through out the day.at least 32 oz.It makes me feel full.

Do not have the problem foods in your house. It takes the most willpower to do this but if all you have to eat is good food, that is all you will eat. Get support from your family as well, it will make things a lot easier.

I'm a guy, so this may be different for girls...
What I do:
1. I eat when I'm hungry and I eat until I'm full.
2. I don't eat anything until I'm hugry again.
It's the snacking foods that chuck you up.

I think, just slow down a bit,and when you feel full, stop eating, I know it's good, but save it for leftovers, for another day, Most things taste better reheated anyway. put smaller portions on your plate to start with. chew every bite 21 times, they always told me!
