There really isn't a point at which we can look back at and say that rap started sucking, but it certainly has hit an all time low and is gaining speed. I think that once the focus became conspicuous consumption and degrading women it started moving in the wrong direction. Lil Jon has just about single handedly destroyed rap by focusing on creating a catchy hook rather than focusing on quality lyrical content.

You need to understand, though, underground hip hop is still alive and well. These guys focus on delivering amazing lyrics over a smooth beat. Not some unneccssarily bass heavy "krunk" s*it we hear on the radio. Check out some intelligent hip hop on your local college station or if you live near a big city check out different places that cater to the underground hip hop crowd.

It's all produced. The music is made up on a machine that's been sampled, sung by somebody (sometimes not even the artist), then on stage and videos they need 100 good looking dancers with walkmen (so they don't have to listen to the music) to cover how boring the music really is.

Its been a lot longer than a year. All the best rappers getting shot hasnt helped the rap game. If Biggie, Pac, Big L and Pun were still about we would have something decent to listen to.
