I'd go with an Apple. Surely you can find something under $1000 easily that will work like a charm. After all, that beauty of an iMac is only $899, and that's a lot of computer!

I would suggest a Dell Laptop Computer for $900 dollars,
or a HP Pavillion dv5000Z for $845 dollars.

Toshiba remains years ahead on specs. ALways have, always will. Mines three years old and others are now catching up to the specs.
They have wonderous tech support and you will love it!
