because its what gets you somewhere in life.
IT something with human nature to look st something pretty or pleasable and feel very positive towards it.
Kinda how the pretty child is treated by freinds and family compared to the ugly child.

There is a certain importance in every society to achieve physical beauty, however, it has been so exploited in this country, few people recognize the inner beauty of a person any more. You can be a knock-out to look at, but an ugly person inside.
Our scope of beauty has been narrowed down to sexual attractiveness rather than looking at the person as a whole. There's a lot of beautiful people out there that we never see because we have been trained to look on the outer person only.

Well I guess you have to define what is beautiful. Boobs, Butt, Legs, Hair, Eyes, Intelligence. Everyone loves different things. Beauty is a tool that has been used since people started having sex. Why is it important, it helps attract a mate.
Now why is it important in today's society? Well it leads to power, fame, and fortune. This is the easiest way for a woman to gain these things so it is often stressed at a young age. You can be a powerful, famous, or rich ugly woman, but the road is much harder. People are lazy and always want to take the easy road.
That said. I <3 Boobs

It obviously isn't that important, because 99% of the human population looks normal, not "beautiful."
See, everything on TV has gone through a psychologist who designs these advertisments to make you THINK it is important. The only "beautiful" people are those made up and airbrushed, because no one looks like that and nothing besides a Hollywood crew can make you look remotely close to that.
Don't let them win. Know that everybody has something about them that is "hot." Figure out what it is on you, and flaunt it.

Because today's society thrives on that kind of thing and nearly worship it! The Cosmetic Industries make millions on their products as people strive to look beautiful. It's so sad!
True beauty is from within. I have seen an elderly person that was so beautiful! No makeup or any kind of adornments to enhance the features but beauty nevertheless shone from within to without the face for all to see. It was simply amazing!!

I would actually argue that that is not the case. While those who make an effort to present themselves well are generally regarded more favorably by others, there are also several elements of society that pride themselves on defying the norm and what might be commonly described as beautiful. Kind of the beauty of our society.
If you're running in a circle that picks on you because of the way you look, you can typically find another circle that will accept you for who you are--unless, of course, you WANT to be a part of the circle that picks on you, in which case, you're free to change to please them. It's up to you.

It's always been important. Since the dawn of humans, we have been doing certain things (whatever those things might be) to attract a mate. Today's society is not much different than it always has been. Women used to put skin-deteriorating white lead paint on their faces just to look pretty, now they get silicone breasts. If it's not one thing, it's another.

In a world that lacks the intelligence and education to understand that people although made out of flesh are not a piece of meat, plus all these TV shows (the O.C. for example) that hypnotize the masses, i think it is only logical to find beauty is above character. I'm not saying to demolish the establishment (altough I think it would be a great idea) im just saying THINK FOR YOURSELVES!!!!

Because the standards of society are based and shallow values. They forget that physical beauty fades as we get older. In the end all that will matter is how you lived your life.

i'm not sure it's just todays society. i think its been around since day dot. the contemporary technology of society have allowed a dispersion of conventions that we lead our lives by. Therefore beauty has become a commodity which can be used to make money, hence we see and hear it everywhere!

It's mostly in American society. Hollywood started it all. The Brits will make movies with people who are plain, heavy, warts and all. Here we must have the perfect bust, waist, teeth, hair or we are forgotten. We are a Barbie /Ken world with the whole enchilada.
