its about 2 inches long and completely black. it has these pinchers that make its back end look like thats its head. my cousins showed up at my hous with it in a jar and i thought it was dead so i poked it with a small stick. as soon as i did that it jumped and looked like it was having convulsions (never seen that before). what type of caterpiller is this?

Hmmm... I really have no idea, but it MIGHT be a sphinx moth... there are apparently different color varieties of them... check out http://tpittaway.tripod.com/sphinx/h_gal.htm

why do you care about a caterpiller. let it free in the wild where it belongs.
