On my laptop the volume buttons are not working. The lights for the "volume up" and "volume down" buttons are on but pressing them does not change the volume. The "mute" button also is not working. It lights up when I put "mute" on via the Control Panel, but the physical buttons are not responding.
Also, the icon for the speakers does not appear on the lower-right corner of my screen anymore.
How do I regain control of my sound?

Go to Start menu, then Programs, then Accessories, then Entertainment. Go to volume control. You can adjust your sound volume in that control.

Also, go to Start menu again then go to RUN and type msconfig and hit enter. Under the Services tab, you will want to enable your WINDOWS AUDIO service so that it loads up everytime you restart Windows.
