It depends on what state you live in. Some states, you can't even buy a gun unless you've been attacked trice and have proof of those attacks before they'll approve it for you for protection. You need to apply for a licence from New York State, which 93% of the time they don't approve. In Virginia, you don't need any licence, once you 18, get two IDs from your wallet and go to WalMart store to get one.
In Texas, you can buy gun any time of day or night, you probably don't even need any ID.
In Pennsylvania, you must have a geniue reason to wanna have a gun in your house. But they do approve upto about 90% of applicants.
Anyway, different states has different rules about household firearms.

It depends, a shot gun is legal to buy in MO at 18, but for handguns it is 21 with a background check, and I believe a safety course completion to conceal or carry.

I think it depends on the state you live.. I know in Vermont. You have to be 18 to buy a rifle, 21 to buy a handgun... but the catch is.. you dont have to be that old to OWN it.. haha.. cool huh.

for a long gun, i.e rifle or shotgun it's 18, for a handgun it's 21.
