I'm a photo retoucher in Houston TX. I can tell you we make pretty good money here, but if you want to make big bucks go to New York City

Most of the photo retouchers who work on large ad campaigns work as staff to the advertising agency that has those accounts. They are usually salaried, so get paid no matter how much time they put in on a project. Freelance photo retouchers make up to $150 per hour depending upon their skills and efficiency when working on complex projects. A colleague of mine does retouching from 8x10 original transparencies for large cruise lines, major beer companies and auto companies. He is well paid on a per assignment basis. One cruise line image was billed over $8,000 for the substitution of one ship for another in a scene. The project took ten days (10 to 14 hour work days are not unusual) As you can guess, the value of the retoucher has all to do with their skills, experience and ability to provide the product on time, every time
