I have read very confusing detailed answers to this question in other places. Can anyone break it down for someone who has not studied the Mayan calendar?

the actual language of the text says that the "world will end as we know it" but there is alot of disgareement on the "as we know it" part and what that refers to.

Please do not vote for me. I am just 'seconding a motion' by GeveraBert. It's how i explain too, but my sources are different:

According to the Mayan Long Count Calendar, the 12th baktun ends and the 13th one begins. It's just like our calendar going from 1999 to 2000. They just used different units of measure--a Baktun is 396 years long.
The calendar doesn't end, btw, that's a widely-held misconception.
Also on that day there's a grand astronomical alignment between the Sun and the Milky Way at dawn. This alignment only happens every 26,000 years and it's theorized that the beginning of the 13th Baktun was synchronized with this occurrence on purpose when the Long Count was created.
Read "Maya Cosmogenesis 2012" by John Major Jenkins for a lot more on this subject. Read my 2012 article on my Jaguar Nights blog or my regular website for other information on that day.
