Because it makes them feel secure to know that they have a desirable quality. Also, teenage girls seem to directly correlate appearance to being liked. So they feel that if they look the prettiest, then they will be liked the most and therefore more happy. Sometimes they feel insecure because the feel that their personality isn't enough to attract people, so that if they don't look beautiful then they will have no one. Assurance of feminity really. Hope this helps.

Insecurity, vanity and hormonal disfuctions. Grown ups sometime do the same, bigger car, better house, blah, blah.
Some people like to show off!
Just be your lovely self and go with the style that makes you feel comfortable and happy.
Confidence and a friendly manner go way further than a competitive attitude.
Yeah is good to look good but think about it, "are these people for real"?

I have no idea, because the majority of the time guys don't notice the extra effort anyway. It's lame. I'd rather be my comfy self in a tank and jeans with a ponytail than worry about some other stupid girls and what they might think.

Because they have to be the best catch.
The Wright Stuff (TV) in a poll, 63% of the young girls asked want to be models.
Apparently a lot of modern young women associate their appearance, more than anything else, with success in life.

sure, adult males are an similar way, in reality an similar issues, seems, money, interest. i imagine maximum human beings pick to imagine of themselves because the perfect, beautiful, wealthy, merchandise of each and every individual's admiration, affection, interest. Why? Validation of their "specialty" in a international populated by technique of billions of different beautiful, wealthy, satisfied human beings. each and every individual succumbs to envy and jealousy at one time or yet another of their lives. Being happy with what you've, quite satisfied, potential no longer being concerned what's happening in each and every individual else's existence. they don't look to be you, no longer paying your costs, they don't quite care. once you've finished that, each and everything else will fall into position.

Because it's the guy's fault!!! That's all they can talk about... body and physical appearance.. so girls think it's true and become competitive with each other...
Here's your answer: men's fault first but than after are you dumb enough to lower yourself to such shallow thoughts... think about it.. it's kind of our fault too!!

Part of growing up, hormones make you become more self aware of your appearance, the need to want to have a boyfriend and peer pressure.

hormones...
combined with the fact that they are learning to socialize with a whole new body - and a whole new power (sexual attraction).
its like; "wha-bam!"
they're a new person - so they feel the need to be recognized!
and when one of them is in a sea of tons of other teenage girls, i bet it WOULD get competitive!
