In this country (Switzerland), only women working in banks, professional services or restaurants are obliged to not show any naked part of their legs.
I think it's extremely strange to expect a girl or young woman wearing stockings outside!

Well I work in a professional office ans all the women here wear some sort of hosiery, usually pantyhose for the older ladies, and stockings and hold ups for the younger girls.
I looks tacky to go around in bare legs and heels wearing office style clothes. It would be like the guys wearing sandals and no socks with their suits and ties.
I feel that the bare legged look is very cheap and innappropiate in business and dressy events. I wear stockings and a garterbelt because I dislike pantyhose, but love the nylon look on my legs. they are so much more sophisticated than thick pantyhose, or even hold-ups.

Both. Stockings have had a boost in popularity recently, though trends are leaning towards legware in general lately. Everybody has their preference between the two. The nice part about pantyhose is that they're cheap and quick to put on. Stockings are nice in that if you run one and buy an extra pair, you still have an extra for the next time one goes south. However, there's the extra hardware of a garter belt and the time it takes to hook them all together. Personally, I prefer pantyhose because they keep my thighs from chafing.

RE:
What is the etiquette on wearing pantyhose/ stockings these days?
My mother would not let me out of the house if I did not have hose on, but now I hear of girls visiting the White House in flip-flops ( I was appalled). So what is the standard these days?

You should wear stockings or pantyhose any time you wear dress heels or business attire, or dress style clothing It gives amsmor finished ans sophisticated look. Tanned bare legs are for shorts and bathing suits, and the occasional casual jeans or kaki skirt.
I am only in my twenties , but have been to Europe and see the difference.. If you can't stand pantyhose, wear stockings, they are much cooler and lighter.

I don't wear pantyhose or stockings at all. I keep my legs tanned and wear long skirts in the winter and short ones in the summer but not mini skirts. I think it's OK to not wear pantyhose or stockings. Now days I don't think anyone would think of you in a negative way. Whatever you do please don't wear pantyhose or stockings w/ open toed shoes.

Here in Texas, pantyhose are a less and less frequent sight. We are even going bare-legged to church and the office. Some high state ocassions, like weddings demand the look and formality of pantyhose, but most of the time, it's just too hot.

I teach school and I don't wear pantyhouse. I wear long skirts and in the winter I wear boots that meet the skirts. In the warmer months my legs are tanned. Most women I work with don't wear panythose. Some women have beautiful legs. Some should probably wear pantyhose!

I am office manager of a large cooperate office and we are required to wear hosiery, except for casual Friday. I do not find that offensive because the men all have to wear jackets and ties, and it would mot be appropriate fore them to come in with boat shoes and no socks. (Although they do on Friday)
I feel that in general it is not appropriate not to wear stockings with heels, business dress, or cocktail dress. I will let the girls get away with it on Casual Friday, only if the whole outfit is casual. If they come in casually dressed without stockings on Friday i let it pass. But if they are all dolled up in heels, skirt dress etc, I tell them they need hose, even on Friday, because they are not dressed casual, and It looks cheap and unfinished to wear dress clothes without stockings.
I personally wear sheer stockings with a garter belt because they are so comfortable. I can se why women would complain about pantyhose inn summer, but I just toll them to switch to stockings or hold ups. I don't care if they wear knee highs, as long as the tops don't show, but bare feet and heels is a business No no.

I am 17 and go to school and work in a law office, so I have to dress up for work. My mother always wears stockings, and I started to do the same, since I started work. I have been promoted twice, and everybody says how sopnisticated I dress. I think its because I started borrowing my mothers sheer stockings that you wear with a garterbelt, they make everything I have look more mature . I wear heels of course, but I haven't bought a lot of career type clothing, I just dressed up a lot of what I had. I think that any woman wearing heels, or in career clothes, should wear hosiery, otherwise it looks sloppy. In this case I have to agree with my mom, stockings make you look way more sophisticated, and put together.
