Yes.
If people would focus on their own lives- their families, jobs, and friends, nobody would be more famous than anybody else because public interest makes people celebrities.
But Americans would rather relax and watch TV and imagine they were famous, living through others, instead of working to make themselves valuable to anyone.

yes i do and i have a theory. I've heard that when the country is at war that there is a collective sadness in us that we may not even be aware of and that we seek comfort in light, fun things that keep our minds off what's going on. You can't control the mess in Iraq but it's lots of fun to dish about what those wacky celebs are up to. And if you look at celebrity in, say, World War 2 when everyone was obsessed with actors and actresses like Betty Davis and Joan Crawford fueding you see this theory has some weight. Betty and Joan were just their eras Paris and Nicole, except with talent.

Not necessarily.
To answer the question, I am exposed to Asian pop cultures, too, and I think it’s more of a human nature to gossip about others. American is obsessed, but it’s no more than what we are programmed to be.
On the other hand, I’ve always thought these people have made tons money as being part of the entertainment industry. Their job, is to entertain us. You can’t bag for exposure when you are a nobody and despise the paparazzi after you know what fame gets you.

Another one of our troops died in Iraq, but Angelina Jolie farted in public! Top story!
A 12-year-old girl walking home from school was kidnapped, raped, murdered, and left in the woods to rot, but J.Lo had an omelette for breakfast! Top story!
Millions of people around the world are impoverished and starving, but Madonna was caught scratching her *** at a senegogue! Top story!
The plight of unemployment is getting worse by the day, but Tom Cruise was seen jumping on a bed at a furniture store! Top Story!
Our education system is in disarray and ill-preparing our youth for their future adulthood, but Hillary Duff was seen...
I can't do this anymore. God help us all.

Yes; thanks to the media. That's how it attracts readers and viewers and makes money. But gosh, Paris' silly excuse for a dog is LOST again? I don't know how I can deal with that on top of the Cruise baby being missing! (or never turning up, one or the other)

Yes i do. It is all over the local news in magazines. I am so tired of it. There are real people in the world who should get noticed for the things they do.

Yes, totally.
The ppl who really should b recognized r the ppl who make a difference (eg. normal everyday ppl or ppl who have been against the odds) not celeberties. It is so annoying cause most of the popular gals at my school are starstruck.
