Israel is the critical player. The Lebanese keep repeating it and it's true, they are not as a country shelling Israel, Hezbollah is, and Lebanon is not powerful enough alone to control Hezbollah, nor is it going to start a civil war (the army against Hezbollah) for the sake of Israel, nor does it want to go to war with Israel. Israel thus will have to drag Lebanon into a war. However, Israel will stop from invading the country. They have a very bitter taste still from the time they did that. They will shell the country, bomb civilian areas, damage infrastructure, bridges, the airport, the electric generators, just out of spite. They know full well that Lebanon cannot control Hezbollah nor does Hezbollah care much about a full scale escalation. War between the two sovereign nations of Lebanon and Israel will not happen, and Lebanon would have to burn before Hezbollah is eradicated. At that point, just perhaps, even the US mighht ask Israel to "exercise some restraint." Israel is not ready to open a front with Syria either. That might happen when the US takes on Iran, which would support Syria if Israel attacked it. The Bush administration has been "preparing" us for that, but it seems that we're no there quite yet.

Yes, I think this will result in war. How can you back off once you've started bombing another country? The diplomatic solution would be to hand over the Israeli soldiers who were captured. All of this could end then. But what would Israel offer in return? How about 'forgetting' to continue their pursuit of those who captured them? That would seem like a fair trade. Frankly, I wish the U.S. was half so diligent in defense of their soldiers and citizens. We could learn a lot from the Israelis.

The reason the airport was bombed is to prevent flying the Israeli soldiers that Hezbollah kidnapped to Iran.

I don't think it will, without another player being added. Syria is backing attacks in Lebanon, so theyre a possiblity, but as is, Israel is only looking out for #1. Theyre surrounded by people who want their land and their lives, and they have to fight or die. Lebanon can't control Hezbollah, as it seems, so Israel has to.
