That depends. If you mean "dial up" modem, probably not. Even a v.92 56k modem doesn't really go even 56k!
If you mean "DSL or high speed connection", possibly. Check with different providers and computer sellers to see which modems you can :
1. afford
2. upgrade if need be
3. use in your region

As somebody else mentioned, for dialup modems, upgrading to a higher speed does not necessarly help (unless you have a very slow modem).
You should also consider adding more RAM to improve the pc performance in general.

If you are running a 56K modem, you have max'd out modem speed.
Your optimum speed will come from cable. If cable is unavailable, the next best will be DSL from your phone company.

If you do not have a broadband connection that would be the place to start. The second place is the memory on your pc. Make sure that you do not have spy ware on your pc. Download spy-bot and run it
