For example, I wanted to make a website about a certain sports team. Would it be illegal if I used advertisements to make money?

Yes, it is copyrighted. You can e-mail the college and ask for permission though.

Yes. If the website has any commercial value at all (your ads, a product, etc.), if you are hoping to make money off the website then you can only use the logo if you license it.

And some of the schools are very quick and aggressive to sue.

Well yes, most of the time. Since most colleges have "copyrights" on their logos. If you did not ask for their permission to use the logos, it would definitely be a "copyright voilation". If the university does not have any copyrights on their logos, you can freely use them. Usually the university's - "University Relations"/"Public Relations" office has more information about the copyrights.

It looks like you have your answer. In order to be able to advertise the name, you have to be a part of the company somehow and/or given permission to use their logo. No company will allow you to make money without them getting their cut. It's just that simple.

any team or company logo that is copyrighted is illegal to duplicate. it can be very costly.

contact the marketing department for the team and tell them you are a fan and want to use the logo. probably will get a big "no" but it wont cost you anything.

If it is a copy of a picture that is the exact replica of a logo, then yes it is if you are selling items or making any sort of tangible (goods) or intangible goods (receiving goodwill) from the website.
