a laptop is portable less bulky to setup and is very convenient for doing simple tasks.
a desktop is a little more powerful, has more run for peripherals and can do more as far as hooking up other devices to it.
it all depends on your needs, I love my laptop.
I can hook up a printer to it and just about anything with these ports on the side,

Laptops can be ported to be desk top computers or set on your desk and used as a desk top and have the ability to be portable. I would go with that. I love my desk top computer too so maybe you should get both.
My laptop is the most powerful computer in the house and has so much room for peripherals and a usb hub could be plugged in to take more peripherals. My desk top has room for 2 usb devices. Its also the most powerful only being 6 months older than my parent's desk top because the laptop has intel centrino duo processor, 2 gig ram, 120gig hard drive, high end nivida graphics card. Its an amazing computer though very very high end but rather afordable.

If you want to use the computer away from your desk (on the road), then buy a laptop.
Laptops are more paractical, but a little more expensive though. With a laptop, you can as exmple use a wirless card and work on the it from you back-yard.
Computers are becoming cheaper now, so there are many affordable laptops.

I have both. But for portability, convenience, and space saver, I would go with a lap-top.
