It's Japanese knotweed and it spreads by runners underground.
Gigging the roots out is a very toilsome job and if you leave a little behind away it comes again.
Have you tried using Roundup weed killer to treat the area but the plants need to be growing still and not getting ready to die down. Don't apply it on too hot a day or a damp day, one dries too quick and the other will dilute.
You don't say how much you have got because you could always dig a trench out about a spade width and depth around the knotweed.
One other thing to bear in mind is that this plant is a reportable plant if growing in quantity. By reportable i mean to the Ministary Of Agriculture Food And Fisheries. Your local council will advise on this.
Good luck.

Poor you - you have my sympathy
Water it with round up, again, and again and again, Round up does work but only if it doesn't rain for several hours after you have applied it.
Japanese knotweed is highly resistant, and creeps everywhere - is it in your neighbours garden or on public land adjacent to your garden? It will even force its way through tarmac.
If you are watering, or spraying round up, make sure you do it on a calm day, as the drift can cause an awful lot of havoc to any other plants you may have - or drift into your neighbour's garden and be the cause of a dispute.
The Head Gardener of a large garden open to the public advised me that the only way they kept it in check was to continually cut it all back to the ground and that weakened it, but eradication was impossible, control the only option.
You could always move!

try using roundup ... it works really well.. and if that doesnt work.. just toss a lil gas on the weed ... one of these should work... just be careful not to hit anything with either of these chemicals as they will kill every plant they touch.
if you just want to sterilize the ground... pour salt on the ground... this will kill it but will also not let anything else live either... so keep that in mind
when you do kill them... to keep them from coming back... buy a weed control fabric ... lay this down and then cover with small pebbles or a good layer of mulch...this will keep sunlight from reaching them.

Try copper sulfate or salt. You may want to try a tree and brush killer on it instead of a weed killer. Another thing you could try is burning it. If all else fails, get a billy goat. They'll eat anything. Just stake the goat by it and let him go to town munching on it.

Look up on google about the Knotweed and see if it has any answers. Or call a landscaper and see what he says

yeah - B&Q get some ivy killer cost a fiver spray on leaves it takes it to the root and kills it from there
if you were to get some root from this plant and cut it into 1 inch pieces and plant it it would grow ....... its a pain in the backside
ivy killer will do it
my problem is its in nextdoors garden and grows from under the fence but ivy killer keeps it from spreading into mine
good luck

you need to dig out ALL of the root, then use a heavy duty weedkiller on the soil to kill any roots you missed, and you wont be able to plant anything till the following year due to strength of weed killer you need. Alternatively, the easy way, is to use ground cover such as paving, agregates, decking etc and use potted plants

I know you said you tried weedkiller, but did you try roundup if that doesn't kill it then I would be surprised, I don't know anything it doesn't kill out.
It is costly, a litre here (Ireland) cost's €43.00 in UK that's approx £29.00 or so.
