The statement at the bottom of this question is posted as yahoo rules. What does this mean?

If I create a website for art work, they want like art gallery sites I exchange links with to be listed under the category called art gallery? Those art work with baseball paints to be listed under a category called baseball paints?

"Correspond with webmasters and other content providers and build rich linkages between related pages.Note: "Link farms" create links between unrelated pages for no reason except to increase page link counts. Using link farms violates Yahoo!'s Site Guidelines and will not improve your page ranking."

>What's a link farm?

A link farm is a set of pages with a long list of unrelated links. These will have been obtained through some kind of (automated) link exchange program. Here is a good example of link farm automation software http://www.sharedlinktraffic.com/ (DONT USE IT)

To understand better what links are good for your site read:

Your site would be ok under Yahoo's rules, a link farm is a site that is just a collection of links for no other reason than to link.

The way you described your site you will have images of this artwork with links to the related gallery. Thus your links will be relevant to each other and shouldn't fall under that restriction from Yahoo.

I do recommend adding more content than just the links though, just to be on the safe side. (i.e. profiles of the artists/galleries, etc.)

Yahoo hates link farms and is very strict about it. You can avoid being found as a "ffa" or free for all links page by only obtaining one way (inbound or pointing to your site only) links from relevant sources. Art gallery sites would be great if they will link to you without having to link back. Try to avoid trading links and you should be OK.

The process of exchanging reciprocal links with Web sites in order to increase search engine optimization. The idea behind link farming is to increase the number of sites that link to yours because search engines such as Google rank sites according to, among other things, the quality and quantity of sites that link to yours. In theory, the more sites that link to yours, the higher your ranking in the search engine results will be because the more links indicate a higher level of popularity among users of the Internet. However, search engines such as Google consider link farming as a form of spam and have been implementing procedures to banish sites that participate in link farming, so the term link farming has garnered negative connotations across the Internet.
