Americans in general donate billions to various charities and organizations. the problem isn't the money, it's that no one wants to volunteer and do the dirty work of getting it to the people who need it. i live in the gulf coast area and after every hurricane there is tons of money pouring in but about a third of the man power to do it all.

Why? Because Americans & our tax dollars are already helping people in other countries and we're running out of money for our own needy.
The US literally gives away more money, food and aid than any other country in the world.
Money from the US goes to help people who refuse to move away from deserts and areas constantly hit by typhoons/tsunamis. Our tax dollars are also spent (or wasted) on people who live in countries who don't have a backbone to band together and stand up to their governments.
When the boo-hooing begins, it's the USA that coughs up the most of the money. Am I bitter? No, but I feel it's senseless to send aid to countries that would spit on us the first chance they had.
When the US becomes bankrupt from being so charitable, I'd love to see who comes to the aid of the US.
So, my solution for those we send aid to is:
Live in a desert?
Send a U-Haul so they can move to an area that supports farming and livestock or show them how to dig a well. Hey, we all have to work, right?
Live in a tsunami prone area?
Move a few miles further inland. Even Americans don't all get to have ocean front property.
Live under a repressive government?
Overthrow it - there's more of you than there is of "them". Do any of them know the definition of the word mutiny??? Try it, that what America did.
******************************************************************************
I donate my time, money and non-perishibles to charities within the borders of the USA because charity begins at home... AND I don't even deduct that from my taxes!

I volunteer, and so do lots of other people. Could we use more volunteers? Sure, but America donates more food, and money to the worlds needy, more than any other country in the world.

ok. All donations first visit a donation source. for instance, red go, who provides the donations to the particular help corporation. In a capitalist society, the employees ought to devour, proper? So red go takes 0.5 the money, and the different 0.5 is going to the reason.

I live in Louisiana. My wife and I both work hard for what we have. Around here we have welfare run rampant. Why would I donate anything to help people who are able to work but instead chose to sit home all day and have babies and collect welfare and complain because they don't have nice vehicles, homes, or money to go out and do things. They can earn a living just like everyone else. I do help people such as disabled veterans and such, just not able bodied people who can work.

I do it all the time. I give so much to charity that i can itemize on my income tax. I give hundreds and hundreds of dollars a year. Plus things like canned food. I do donate. A lot.

I think this is a complicated issue. First according to a lot of international surveys, Americans do donate more of their incomes to charities than many other countries do-- however most of this goes to our churches rather than to our poor. For a good analysis of philanthropy go to Robert Putnam's book "Bowling alone".

You may not realize it but some people like to feel superior to other people. By them having while others don't, it actually gives certain types of people satisfaction. Sad but true and there is your answer little girl. Now go back to sleep .
