Does the jet stream travel faster east than the earth travels west? What makes it go at all?

the guy before me asnwered it correcly, but what makes the jet stream go is first its an air mass high in the stratosphere and what makes it blow in different directions, and every other kind of wind, is density differences. it will always travel from high to low.
