people have done it for years. and all i've ever heard of was getting a case of heartburn. and most of the time it's better than any restaraunt. if it makes u feel better ask for a knife and inspect it right there in front of the vender. if it's not cooked properly leave it with him. now i wouldn't buy something like sushi. no way there are certain specs on that stuff.

I wouldn't take a chance on that and besides I don't think all vender's cover their hands or use sanitizers while their working out their. I just wouldn't trust it, and it's all on the individuals if they decide to trust going to a side walk vender.

Your concern should not only be with STREET VENDORS. Years' studies by health depts, agencies and others have uncovered a library of unpublished reports of unsanitary conditions at many restaurants, and yes, even Grociery outlets. Not to pull these bacteria-infested businesses out of the woodwork, to get to your initial question about STREET VENDORS.....
Yes, most, if not all such street vendors are NOT as "regulated" as the indoor outlets, it is merely a stroke of luck to find a street vendor who you feel "fits your requirements" of cleanliness with preparation.
MY opinion would rest with the vendor who routinely CLEANS thier cooking area / surface before placing the food to cook each serving.
Cleaning chemicals like ALCHOHOL commonly disinfects best, but leaves a *starchy* taste on the foods.
GOOD LUCK with your choosing!

Probably more safe than a restaurant. Side walk vendors cook in public so everyone is watching to make sure they don't do anything that is not heigienic.
In restaurants you don't know what kid is in the back having a bad acne day. :)

Most sidewalk vendors have to be approved by the board of health. However, their inspections are only once a year! I personally do not trust them. Not only are ther issues with the equipment, but environmental ones as well.

I would not recommend it. If you only knew half of the things they do you won't even come close to them. Urinating, dirty hands, items that gone bad, and so on. If you can't bring your own lunch, which could be even a plain cheese sandwich, buy in a place that looks and feels clean (no foul smell, flies, roaches, or mice). My advice to you is to try to make your own lunch - you know it's fresh, clean, and delicious.

You can determine how sanitary they are by the way they keep their area clean and how they handle the food. It's a risk a lot of us take. Most people don't get sick unless they have a weak stomach.

You can run into bad hygeine habits anywhere you eat. Preparing food yourself is probably the best bet if you're worried about bad habits.
