First I would tell her that around her age women get their period and explain that this is a normal part of growing up. You can make it an exciting transition into womanhood by buying pads and tampons for her and putting it is a special little bag or basket in the bathroom so that when she gets it she has everything available. A friend of mine actually celebrated their daughter's period by buying a cake...kinda funny but cute. It's best to tell her as much as you comfortably can and tell her you are there if she has any more questions. You can always find age appropriate books to help her along. Good luck!!

I'm sorry. I have to laugh at this question. My kids, ages 4 (boy), 6 (girl) and 9 (girl) all know about periods and what they are. And the "equipment" I use for a time each month. I never get any privacy in the bathroom and I was just very matter of fact with my period with them.

I was sitting on the potty a while back and said "OH MAN!" and my 4 year old little boy asked "What...do you have your period again?" I died laughing. I was just out of toilet paper but he knew.

He is going to be one of the boyfriends/husbands who have no issues with buying pads for his girlfriend/wife.

There are great books out there. American Girl has one that I think explains about periods and body changes. I bet the library has some books as well for you AND your daughter.

Tell her that every goes through it and it's nothing to be ashamed of or embarassed about. Teach her how to keep track of her cycle (as she gets more regular) so she knows when to expect it. Tell her not to believe everything she hears about a woman being on her period (she can't swim, can't get pregnant, etc.). There are lots of books out there that you can read to prepare you for how to explain it to her and books for her to read (or for you to read together).
