In my front yard we have an old milk-can. (So old you won't believe it!) Anyway, my father was wanted to mow under it so he moved the milk-can. Under it, was a small garder snake. Should we get rid of it? He really doesn't do any harm and i know garder snakes don't bite but my father wants it out. I told him he doesn't bother anyone but he insists. The snake is kinda cute. What should i do?

Well first u have to catch it, or get someone around to catch it. (if you dont want to kill it where its at) and then u can let it loose elsewhere, OR you can bring it to a local pet shop and give it to them.... you might even get a few bucks out of the deal! =)

If you leave it exposed long enough and just nudge at it, it will move away on its own. They are harmless, won't bother anyone, and keep down the population of crickets and other ugly insects that would otherwise try to invade your house or eat your plants. Tell dad to chill for a few minutes to let the poor thing find its own way to leave or just tap its butt with a broom handle to help it along. If it heads somewhere you don't want it to go, just use the top of the broom to block it, until it's going somewhere harmless, like farther away from your house under a bush. It will find a new home easily enough.

Yikes! I am SO afraid of snakes! But if it doesn't bother you, I don't think it does any harm. They DO bite, they just aren't venemous. Personally, I would want to get rid of it -- relocate it or something, but that's your call. I have heard stories of garter snake infestations, so be careful! Get a dog or something.
This might be helpful: http://www.research.ku.edu/explore/v1n2/snakes.html
Here ar some excerpts:
The most entertaining and challenging inquiries we get at the Division of Herpetology at the KU Natural History Museum are from frustrated (and frequently terrified) homeowners whose basements or property are overrun by snakes.
Many people call to identify a snake they found in their house or yard; occasionally, we receive calls from physicians seeking verification of a snake's identity in the case of patients who have been bitten. But THE most frequent inquiries go something like this: "My basement is full of snakes. What can I do?" Or: "Snakes have congregated under my front porch; how can I get rid of them?"

You are right - they are harmless. If possible, you should keep the snake around - it will eat plenty of other pests your father would hate more!
