Try out the following artists:
- Little Brother
- Mos Def
- Talib Kweli
- Common
- De La Soul
- Dead Prez
- Black Eyed Peas (the "pre-Fergie" era)
- The Roots
- Madlib (and his alter-ego, Quasimoto)
- Five Deez
- Ugly Duckling
- Slum Village...
I could go on and on here - lol.
And of course, there's all the good old-school stuff (probably anywhere from '87 - '95, with a few good ones sprinkled throughout the late 90's)

Well I'm not a big rap specialist, but I do listen to some good stuff though. Have you heard of Asheru? He does the soundtrack for the cartoon show The Boondocks. He's more or less hip-hop than rap.
He has some really great songs. His "Mood Swing" is a great song and even "The Boondocks Opening Theme" has some great lyrics and a good beat.
Hope that I have given you something new. Take care.
