Our country is sickening sometimes. Celebrity gossip, this and that, whos dating who, blah blah blah. These people make millions and millions off us. Most of them act like they are gods gift to the world. Our society continues to approve of and worship and support people who work the least and live the best lives doing next to nothing for a living. Either having fun playing a GAME or ACTING (being someone they are not). These people are just people. When will we wake up and stop supporting these people? Will there ever be a day where things of this nature change? Where the people who work the least and live the best finally get brought down to the level of the average HARD WORKING American?

i agree 100%...i personally dont care whos dating whom, or whos having whos child and how the conception came about, or how much money they make (although i do feel they are overpaid)...however, we as a society set these standards for them and i suppose we all have the opportunity to go into the fields they are in whether acting or sports or music or politics....but isnt is funny that SOME (your true blues) politicians make less money governing our true world than the actors make on the big screen portraying our make believe world? i mean we cant afford to pay our deficit but we can afford to have movies gross in the millions within the first 3 days out...what a waste of money!

What about the flip side to your question? Why do we continue to glorify the "average hard working American?" What's so awe-inspiring about being average? What's so glorious about spending 40 hours a week doing something a job that you hate? Who wants to raise their kids by saying "Go to school, pay attention, and work hard, and someday you can middle class and be bored with life." Anyone? No, I didn't think so. We glorify movie stars and athletes because they represent things that we all want to be: attractive, successful, strong, popular, talented, and loved. Yes, some of them don't deserve it, but at the end of the day they're famous because huge numbers of people want to pay a few dollars to watch these people live out the fairy tales that we can't. It's all escapism, and it's human nature.

you're RIGHT.

I can't believe it myself. Washington DC is spending abou 800 million (and it's likely to be more than that by the time they are done building it) to build a baseball stadium.

in the meantime the schools in DC are the worst in the nation.

and the taxpayers are paying for this stadium so the "athletes" can earn a 10 million dollar a year salary !!!

I think this is unconstitutional.

People are conditioned by the media. It is funny some of the worst criminals in the world are hero worshipped. This is only because they can handle a ball.

We are living in a shallow world and place and time.

I agree with whoever wrote this... We do need to stop glorifying these people... They bleed just like we do... We go thru the same things but they get paid for airing there laundry... I frankly dont care about no celebrity.... I could care less whos dating who, or who broke up with who this week... Let them live there life...

i agree. why should they be considered "role models" when all we see of them is when they're acting like someone else, playing a sport, or on the news for doing something stupid. They shouldn't be payed so much and it's shameful how people look up them. (then pro athletes whine like little babies about not getting paid enough) embarrassing really, that part of our culture is embarrassing

Today, all the celebrity crap is broadcasted as a means to distraction. The only people who give a rats behind about these rich phonys are those who are shallow and mindless.

I have stopped contributing. No more movies, music, or sports events. I even try to avoid driving and turning on lights in my house so that I don't contribute to the profits of oil and energy companies either.

Good question, I guess it is do to a natural need to establish the head of the social hierarchy. That's kinda crazy though, because they are no better than us, and when they die they become nobodies, just like us.

My friends and I refuse to buy anything that endorses professional athletes--the reason being, if the product was really that good and that reasonably priced, they would not have to have a super athlete pimp it!
