Health and safety?

Because they had their radios and oxygen masks in them. Despite popular belief most kamikaze pilots were not willing to sacrifice themselves. They were taken from universities as, being the most intelligent, could learn to fly quickly. They were told that if they did not volunteer their families would suffer and they would, personally, be sent to fight in the most dangerous locations where they would surely be killed. Also there would be shame and dishonour on their families forever. Very few kamikaze pilots actually managed to crash into their targets and, in total, there were about 3,000 of them. Of these only about 300 actually reached their targets as most were either shot down, being poor pilots and not trained in combat, crash landed or escaped. Of the 300 that did make it probably only 30 or so actually crashed into ships, aircraft carriers being their specific targets, in a vain bid to stop US planes from attacking Japan. Naturally because of the spectacular nature of what they did Hollywood picked up on it and, like a lot of myths created by the film makers, made the kamikaze phenomenon appear much bigger than it was.

quatt47 forgot one thing, the kamikaze pilots could return, but were not expected to. Thats why they got a last meal and clean uniform. They were the most dangerous missions. The japanese high command knew they were running short on pilots. The pilots were told to sacrifice themselves to kill a target if they were hit and could not make it back.

To stay warm with. There was no heat in those early planes and flying at 8 or 10 thousand feet is very cold.

Cuz they hoped their plane would miss, and they could start a new trend when they landed.
